What would happen if we increased funding? Taxpayers bitch. What would happen if we decrease or refuse to increase funding for failing districts? Schools go out of business or they keep use textbooks from the 70s (this was the case in a high school I attended). Did I learn less because the books were old and the air conditioner/heaters barely worked? I can’t really tell you, I was sleeping through most of my classes.

Vinyl lovers have a new haven in Fort Collins. The Bizarre Bazaar is a relatively new record and book store located on Linden Street, run by Jane Makarchuk and her husband Scott. Makarchuk said her family is from the northeast and had run a bookstore before.

The Colorado House passed a bill Tuesday that would allow same-sex couples to get civil unions in the state, sending the bill to Governor John Hickenlooper’s desk where it is expected to be signed into law. The bill passed by a vote that was close to party lines–all House Democrats voted in favor, with only two Republicans joining, for a 39-26 vote.

Continue readingAfter no vote on the Senate’s Disaster Relief Appropriations Act at the end of last year, legislators were forced to rewrite the bill, which offered billions of dollars in aid to victims of Hurricane Sandy and the wildfires in states like Colorado. But the House of Representatives’ draft of the bill, which passed on January 29th, excluded the funding for Colorado. That bill offered $50.7 billion dollars in relief to individuals and businesses affected by Sandy.

The latter half of 2012 was marked by a series of deadly shootings, including one right here in Colorado. The mass shootings in Aurora, CO and Newtown, CT were just two of sixteen that happened last year, with a total of at least 88 casualties and many more wounded. These shootings, especially the highly-publicized ones in Aurora and Newtown, have reinvigorated the call for stricter gun controls.
